Update(13/10/2012): I've fixed a light on Esprit's fur that bugged me
Oh here's my Samhain picture a bit early x) Call it Samhain, Samhuinn or Samain depending where you're living. Or even the Celtic New Year or maybe Halloween if you insist Some people saw WIPs of it on my Twitter, you still can check it as I'll keep posting my WIPs on there from time to time -> [link]
It's been a while since I wanted to draw my two mysterious characters Aloka( the black one) and Esprit( the gray one) fighting each other. The idea I had in mind could fit with the true meaning of the Samhain. Basically, the last night of october is the end of the Light season and the beginning of the dark season, in opposition with the Beltane( last day of April). For the Beltane people use fires to protect themselves, and as it is the perfect opposite of the Samhain it was obvious that I use snow. Also since it's the begining of the Dark season I opted for a sunset scenary. What better than the sun setting down to illustrate the new season?
The Samhain is also the time when the doors to the Other World are open, and anyone might cross one without noticing. It's time to enter a world of faeries, magical creatures, magicians, deads and Gods, anything that left. It is obvious that if we can cross these doors, so can the people of our Celtic Other World! However if you happen to enter the other world, be careful to find a way back here in ours before the night is over... As time doesn't go by in the same manner in the two worlds, if you come back late you might happen to come back... thousands of years later! It's what happen to Angus when he left the Tir Na n'Og and many other heros of the Celtic folklore( and the same goes with the Norse folklore).
Then I mixed what I know of this wonderful tradition with my personal story( only my head, no comic sorry). My characters are supposed to be the Guardians of our world, protecting the gate that can lead to the Other World. But they don't get along very well... On the ground is the mark of a crescent moon( mostly hidden, and a bit glowing) surrounded by three rocks. One rock has the writings "Grian", another one is "Gealach" and the last one is "Talamh", which mean the Sun, the Moon and the Earth in scottish gaelic. Stepping in there circle, on the crescent moon mark in some special time( Beltane at 12 a.m, Samhain at 12 p.m, etc) can lead you to the Other World if you're not careful.
I'm definitly not a bird artist They're supposed to be the crows Huginn and Muninn, Esprit's guides( pretty inspired by the Norse mythology eh? ). If the background reminds you of Okami, specially the tree... Know one thing: you are completly, totally... right I've always find the game's backgrounds very inspiring, so yeah
I think that's all... Happy Samhain/Halloween guys!!!!
Music inspiration "Guardians at the Gate" from Audiomachine -> [link] (les français remarqueront que la pub' Mercedes a repris cette magnifique musique pour la saccager, la piétiner et la scier à la tronçonneuse d'une manière honteusement horrible et pénible pour les oreilles u_u") Characters and artwork (C)
The artwork is well done and organized on this piece here. The details in the back ground, as well as the characters, really do a fine job on setting the mood. The complexity of the positions of the characters, in this case the ones that are engaged, stands out from the smooth nature background. i notice there is a tree and two black birds that are not totally blended with the background but are put there to help with the depth perception.I can also see the tention on the character's faces and all the fantastic details of the fur they both have. I love the art and want to see more in the future .
Wow, there is so much that is awesome about this piece. The details are breathtaking, and I love the movement of the piece. I love the fur detail and the emotion. The shading is wonderful, and I love the mountains in the background!
One thing I'm confused about is the light source. It's not really evident where the light is coming from. The shading and highlights suggest that the light is coming from overhead, yet it seems like the sky is too dark for it to be midday yet. Also, there are stars in the sky, which also makes the light source confusing.
Also, Esprit's front left and back right legs look a little odd to me. It seems like the back leg is in a very awkward position, and possibly even uncomfortable for Esprit. The same goes for the front leg. The bend at his 'wrist' looks a little unnatural.
Overall, this is an amazing rendition, and it looks very nice!
Bon, un peu tard, mais j'adore, bien évidemment !! Le fond est magnifique, très paisible contrairement aux 2 protagonistes ! Les effets de couleurs et de lumière sont toujours aussi beau ♥
